A judge Wednesday sentenced a 21-year-old Baton Rouge man to 50 years in prison for robbing a group of people at gunpoint in 2013 after their vehicle ran out of gas.

Johndell Raymond Taylor, who was found guilty of armed robbery last fall, was sentenced as a second-felony offender by state District Judge Lou Daniel.

Taylor, who was 18 at the time of the armed robbery, was accused of offering to help a group of people whose vehicle ran out of gas on Prescott Road, then ordering them to give him their money. The victims were robbed of $300 and a cellphone in the May 11, 2013, incident, court records indicate.

Taylor had previous convictions for simple burglary and bank fraud.
