Former Louisiana state Fire Marshal Henry Hillary Fry died Friday at his home in Covington, the state Fire Marshal’s Office said Tuesday.

Fry was 68.

Fry served as fire marshal under Gov. Kathleen Blanco from 2004 to 2007, state Fire Marshal Butch Browning said in a news release.

Fry served as the assistant fire marshal until his 2004 appointment to lead the office, Browning said. He commanded the state’s fire service response to the damage from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Browning said Fry developed an “aggressive” review and inspection program to quickly reconstruct damaged buildings in the state.

“I am proud of the contributions that Henry has given to this office,” Browning said in the release. “We are better today because of his passion and dedication. I will never forget his desire for fire safety and will always remind our personnel of his purpose.”

Funeral services are set for Thursday at Jesuit High School in New Orleans, Browning said. Visitation starts at 1 p.m., and a Catholic Mass begins at 2 p.m.
