Sacred Heart of Jesus Church and School are undergoing restoration work on their campus in the heart of Baton Rouge.
The church interior is being painted by Burleigh Painting, and Associated Waterproofing is pressure washing and waterproofing the exterior of the church, along with Sacred Heart of Jesus School Gym and Joseph Hall, a news release said.
Sacred Heart of Jesus Church was completed in 1942, and the school gym was completed in 1957. Joseph Hall, originally the Sacred Heart Convent, was completed in 1954 to house the Sisters of St. Joseph. When the nuns moved in 1985, they requested the building be renamed Joseph Hall. Today, it houses the teacher’s lounge, school offices and classrooms, including the school’s music, art and computer departments.
Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, created in 1928, is enjoying a renaissance under the leadership of its pastor, the Rev. Miles Walsh, the release said.
A number of projects are in the works through the parish Growing into the Future campaign, including the renovation of the former Catholic Youth Organization Gymnasium, now known as the Sacred Heart of Jesus Activity Center.
Other campuswide improvements include upgrades to the historic Sacred Heart ball field, landscaping and new signage.
