Almost 100 people have signed a petition asking the Metro Council not to privatize the parish prison, an option that some council members have said is preferable to a new tax.

The petition claims that private prisons do not emphasize rehabilitation, which is the same argument East Baton Rouge Parish Prison Warden Dennis Grimes made during a prison media tour earlier this week. Instead, the petition suggests that the police department change its approach toward non-violent crimes, perhaps by swapping out jail times for fines.
