In honor of National Rice Month and Hunger Action Month, which take place in September, the Louisiana rice industry has teamed up with the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank to help provide food for those in need, a news release said.

Louisiana rice farmers donated more than 16,000 pounds of rice that will provide nearly 200,000 meals in the Baton Rouge area, the release said.

“Even though our crops were not as good as they have been in the past — we’re 15 to 20 percent off in acres this year — we’re still thankful for our bountiful harvest. So, giving back to the food bank here in Baton Rouge is something we can do to help those less fortunate,” said Kevin Berken, chairman of the Louisiana Rice Promotion Board.
