A Kenner woman was killed on Interstate 10 in West Baton Rouge Parish early Friday after a driver lost control of his vehicle when his tire blew out and struck her vehicle, State Police said.
Antonio Zapata, 56, was driving his 2007 Toyota Sequoia east on I-10 when his left rear tire blew out, causing him to lose control of his vehicle and cross the median into the westbound lanes near the Lobdell Highway exit, State Police said in a news release.
He struck Yvonne Gooch, 66, on the driver’s side of her 1999 Lexus RX 300, which flipped twice after impact, State Police said.
Despite wearing a seat belt, Gooch suffered fatal injuries from the crash, and the West Baton Rouge Parish coroner pronounced her dead at the scene.
Zapata, of New Orleans, and his six passengers suffered minor injuries and were taken to the hospital, State Police said.
He will be booked into the West Baton Rouge Parish Jail on counts of negligent homicide, careless operation, child restraint violations and no insurance.
Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in the crash, State Police said, but a toxicology sample will be taken from both drivers and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
