A crash on La. 35 near the Branch Fire Department Saturday night resulted in the death of a Branch woman and the arrest of a Church Point man on a count of vehicular homicide, authorities said.

Jean Mouille, 24, was traveling north on La. 35 when he tried to pass Crystal Castille, 34, and hit the rear left side of her 2005 Nissan Altima with the front right side of his 2014 Ford F250, said Brooks David, a State Police spokesman.

The impact caused Castille to run off the right side of the road and strike a telephone pole, David said.

Although she was wearing a seat belt, Castille suffered critical injuries. She was taken to a hospital where she was later pronounced dead, David said.

Mouille was also wearing a seat belt and was not injured, David said. He submitted to a chemical breath test on the scene and his blood-alcohol content was over 0.08 percent, David said.

A blood-alcohol content of 0.08 percent or higher is considered presumptive evidence of drunken driving in Louisiana.

Mouille was booked into the Acadia Parish Correctional Center on counts of vehicular homicide, reckless operation, open container and illegal window tint.

The crash remains under investigation.
