An East Baton Rouge Parish grand jury on Wednesday accused a former Baton Rouge police narcotics officer of stealing three shotguns and more than $27,000 in cash seized during drug investigations.

Michael Thompson, 28, of Denham Springs, was indicted on 16 counts of theft that stretched from September of last year to April.

Assistant State Attorneys General David Caldwell and Butch Wilson said Thompson screwed up 16 narcotics cases.

Thompson resigned from the department shortly after he was arrested in mid-April.

He blamed his addiction to prescription pain medication for the thefts, police have said.
