Volunteers with the American Red Cross and other community organizations will install free smoke alarms in Scotlandville Saturday morning.

“Installing smoke alarms cuts the risk of someone dying from a home fire in half, so we’re joining with groups from across our community to install smoke alarms,” Merri Alessi, executive director for the Red Cross in the Capital Area, said in a news release.

The volunteers will focus on an area bordered by Scenic Highway to Pembroke Street and from 68th Avenue to 74th Avenue. Volunteers from the American Red Cross, Community Against Drug and Violence Inc. with Pat McCallister-LeDuff, and Men of Empowerment with Eugene Williams also will teach people about what they should do in case of a fire.

The event is sponsored by ExxonMobil.
