Broadmoor High School will soon get air conditioning in its gym. It is the last high school in the East Baton Rouge Parish school system that lacks air conditioning.

The School Board agreed Sept. 16 to spend as much as $1.3 million to tear out the old heating system in the Broadmoor High gym and replace it with a modern heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system.

The new system would also heat and cool the adjacent locker rooms.

Construction is scheduled to begin as early as Dec. 4 and is set for completion March 3, before the weather heats back up in the spring and summer.

The school system will be seeking bids from contractors to do the work.

Earl Kern, program director for CSRS/Tillage Program Management, said with past air-conditioning installations, the work was done during summer break to avoid disruption. But Broadmoor High Principal Shalonda Simoneaux is eager to get the gym air-conditioned as soon as possible.

“She wants it done immediately,” Kern said. “She’s going to make it work.”

Kern said the gym will be off-limits in January and February and perhaps for a week or so at the end of the semester, which ends Dec. 15.
