We polled The Advocate’s staff for the most quotable movies — the ones with the most lines that have crossed over into everyday conversation — and came up with this list.*

1. Casablanca (1942)

Starring : Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman

Classic lines:

  • “Here’s looking at you kid.”
  • “Of all the gin joints, in all the towns, in all the world, she walks into mine.”
  • “Round up the usual suspects.”
  • “Play it once, Sam. For old times’ sake.”

Note: “Play it again, Sam,” according to editorial writer Lanny Keller, who claims he can recite the script, is not in the movie. There are two lines imploring Sam to play “As Time Goes By,” the one uttered by Ilsa (Bergman) above and again, by Rick (Bogart): “If she can stand it, I can! Play it!”

2. Animal House (1978)

Starring : John Belushi, Tom Hulce, Kevin Bacon, Karen Allen

Classic lines:

  • “Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, son.”
  • “They confiscated everything, even the stuff we didn’t steal!”

3. The Princess Bride (1987)

6. Forrest Gump (1994)

7. Ghostbusters (1984)

Classic lines:

Note: One of the most quotable lines of the movie might actually be the theme song. “Who ya gonna call?”

8. The Godfather (I, II and III — 1972, 1974 and 1990)

Starring : Marlin Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Robert De Niro, Diane Keaton

Classic lines:

  • “I’m gonna make him an offer he can’t refuse. OK? I want you to leave it all to me.”
  • “Leave the gun. Take the cannoli.”
