An inmate on work release walked off the job at a Baton Rouge lumber yard and is being sought by East Baton Rouge Parish deputies, Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Casey Rayborn Hicks said Thursday.
Damarkius Spears, 24, was last seen Wednesday evening at 84 Lumber, 8675 S. Choctaw Drive, Hicks said. An employee at the lumber yard reported that Spears was wearing a black shirt, black pants and brown boots.
Spears had been convicted of distributing marijuana in 2007 in the 21st Judicial District, said Pam Laborde, a state Department of Corrections spokeswoman. It wasn’t immediately clear how much time remains on his sentence.
“Any escaped inmate should be considered dangerous and not approached by residents,” Hicks said in a news release.
The 21st Judicial District covers Livingston, St. Helena and Tangipahoa parishes.
