War of 1812 re-enactors gathered at the Chalmette Battlefield on Friday to commemorate the 199th anniversary of the Battle of New Orleans, where American forces under Gen. Andrew Jackson defeated an invading British army. The battle took place on Jan. 8, 1815, and was the final battle of the War of 1812. Re-enactors dressed as soldiers and civilians shared stories and fired cannons and muskets. The event concludes on Saturday, with free shuttle buses to the battlefield from the St. Bernard Parish Government Complex, 8201 West Judge Perez Drive, Chalmette.
