Highland Road Park Observatory is hosting American Radio Relay League Field Day, celebrating ham, or amateur, radio communication, from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday.
There is no charge to attend, and the public is invited.
Activities include learning to send a name in Morse code, contacting ham radio operators in other states and finding out how to obtain a transmitting license. There will be a solar viewing from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and evening sky viewing from 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.
During Field Day, the Baton Rouge Amateur Radio Club will take part in a 24-hour nationwide emergency exercise. The club will set up temporary stations at the observatory and use a mix of battery, solar and low-power outputs to make contact with stations all over North America.
