A 6.3-acre plot on Parkway Drive, near Bluebonnet Boulevard and Burbank Drive in Baton Rouge, has been sold for $1.1 million to a company that plans to build a charter school on the site.

The Ryan Companies, which is based in Austin, Texas, bought the land from Garry and Lanny Lewis in a deal that closed before Christmas. Ryan is a builder for Charter Schools USA.

Charter Schools USA operates 48 schools in five states. Charter Schools USA opened its first Baton Rouge facility in August, Baton Rouge Charter Academy at Mid City.

In October, the city-parish Planning Commission approved the conditional use rezoning of the Parkway Drive site for the Burbank Charter School. The Burbank Charter School will have 860 students in grades kindergarten to eight. The two-story school would be about 69,000 square feet and feature 36 classrooms as well as a soccer field.

Charter Schools USA has said it plans to open four schools in metro Baton Rouge.
