The number of Louisiana residents who got coverage through the federal insurance marketplace jumped to 214,148 for the entire open enrollment period, roughly 28,000 more than in 2015.

The New Orleans area had the greatest number of people, at 88,052, who bought Affordable Care Act coverage, known as “Obamacare,” or were automatically re-enrolled in marketplace plans. In the Baton Rouge area, 45,424 did; in Lafayette, 26,848; Shreveport, 37,864; Lake Charles, 7,231; Alexandria, 20,025; and in the Monroe-El Dorado, Arkansas region, 22,114.

Nationwide, 12.7 million consumers enrolled. Roughly 11.7 million people enrolled in plans during the 2015 open enrollment period, but that number fell to 9.9 million by June 30 as people dropped out of plans or stopped paying for them.
