Rouses Market is opening a new store Wednesday in Gretna, the first of three south Louisiana locations it could open by the end of the year.
The next new Rouses will be at Johnston Street and Duhon Road in Lafayette, south of the Acadiana Mall. It’s set to open in October. Once the store opens, it will join two other Lafayette area stores: one on Bertrand Drive and one in Youngsville.
The first Baton Rouge-area Rouses is under construction at the Juban Crossing development in Livingston Parish. Donny Rouse, managing partner of the Thibodaux-based chain, said the hope is to complete the project by the end of the year.
And work is set to begin in spring 2015 on a 55,545-square-foot store on Airline Highway in the Long Farm Village development in Baton Rouge.
The 45,000-square-foot Gretna store, located in the Westside Shopping Center, will be the third Rouses on the West Bank, but the first in the area the company built from the ground up. Rouses acquired the Algiers and Belle Chasse Highway locations in 2007, when it bought out the local Sav-A-Center grocery stores.
Rouse said even though Rouses upgraded all of the old Sav-A-Center stores, the West Bank location will have some advantages.
“When we build a store from the ground up, we can do it exactly how we want it and give customers everything we think they want,” Rouse said.
For the Gretna store, that will include indoor and outdoor café seating and a canopy so shoppers will be able to load their vehicles during rainfall without getting wet.
This will be the sixth Rouses to open in 2014, but first in Louisiana. The chain opened five stores on the Alabama Gulf Coast in February after it bought properties from Belle Foods at a bankruptcy auction.
