Superior Grill, the popular local Tex-Mex restaurant, plans to open a second Baton Rouge location at the intersection of Highland Road and Kenilworth Parkway.

Designs and plans for the restaurant are still being developed, but Steven Fontenot, district manager, said the goal is to have Superior Grill open “in a year.”

The restaurant will take up a building in the Kenilworth Shopping Center that had been occupied by Arzi’s and Monjunis.

Superior Grill has had a restaurant at 5435 Government St. since January 1991. Over the years, the restaurant has built up a loyal following for its food, atmosphere and margaritas.

“Everyone has been saying we need another spot, so hopefully it will work out,” Fontenot said.

Superior Grill has three other restaurants: in New Orleans, Shreveport and Birmingham, Alabama. Superior Restaurant Group also operates a Superior Seafood and Oyster Bar in New Orleans and Cocina Superior, a modern Tex-Mex restaurant in Birmingham.

The Highland Superior will be “a little more upscale” than the Government Street restaurant, but not quite as modern as Cocina Superior, Fontenot said.
