Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers plans to open its first Baton Rouge location at 6464 Siegen Lane.

The Wichita, Kansas-based chain has applied for a permit to renovate the building that had been occupied by Arby’s, according to documents filed with the city-parish.

Freddy’s, which is privately held, had 135 stores at the end of 2014. The company said it is on track to open about 45 locations this year, including its first restaurants in Louisiana, Indiana, Montana and Ohio.

Freddy’s has been open since the 1950s, specializing in frozen custard, a treat that is richer and smoother than ice cream because of a churning process that minimizes ice crystals and excess air. The chain also serves steakburgers, made from premium quality ground beef, and hot dogs.

An opening date for Freddy’s was not disclosed. The chain is also opening a location in Lafayette, in Ambassador Town Center, a retail development anchored by Costco and set to open in March 2016.
