Chambers of commerce and business organizations around the state are partnering with the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry on a series of presentations offering employers a preview of the 2017 legislative session.

Southern hosting scientific conference
Southern University is hosting the 74th joint annual meeting of Beta Kappa Chi Scientific Honor Society and the National Institute of Science from March 15-18 at the Renaissance Baton Rouge Hotel, 7000 Bluebonnet Blvd., Baton Rouge.
The theme is “Utilizing Innovative STEM Research to Address Today’s Current Global Challenges."
The event will feature lectures from scientists, workshops, exhibits from national programs, a career fair and competitive student research presentations where monetary awards and prizes will be awarded. Representatives from Historically Black Colleges and Universities from around the country will attend.
The meeting provides a platform for graduate, undergraduate and high school students to present scientific research projects from science, technology, engineering and mathematics areas, such as toxicology, agriculture, politics and behavioral sciences, as well as science education.
A high school component for students grades 9-12 allows young scientists to present posters at the hotel on Saturday morning.

Workshop addresses federal trade policies
A workshop titled "Trends in Trade: A Discussion on Current Federal Policies" will be held by the World Trade Center from noon to 1:30 p.m. March 22 at the Palace Cafe, 605 Canal St., in New Orleans.
Speakers Edward T. Hayes, of Leake and Andersson, and Bill Frymoyer, of Stewart and Stewart, will focus on federal trade policies and their impact on Louisiana businesses.

Women business conference scheduled
The Louisiana Small Business Development Center at Southeastern Louisiana University, along with Tangipahoa Professional Women, will host Women Mean Business 2017 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 23.
The conference will be on the SLU campus in Hammond, in the Student Union Ballroom.
“This full day event will be jam packed with knowledge, tools, resources and connections," said Sandy Summers, assistant director of the LSBDC.
Speakers include international speaker and leadership coach Dima Ghawi and President and CEO of North Oaks Health System Michele Sutton.
A panel of experts will address top wellness issues for women in 2017 and another will address business and career success.
Cost is $35 in advance and $45 on event day, and includes lunch.
Environmental law enforcement event set
An environmental law enforcement training workshop will be held from 8:30 a.m. to noon on March 15 at the Joseph S. Yenni Building, Room 405, fourth floor, at 1221 Elmwood Park Blvd. in Jefferson.
Federal, state and local law enforcement agencies will discuss environmental crimes and corresponding laws, including regulations and penalties that pertain to illegal dumping and burning, water pollution, littering and air pollution.
Agencies participating include the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Enforcement Division, the Department of Environmental Quality Criminal Investigation Division and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Criminal Investigation Division.
The St. Tammany Parish Litter Court will present its experience establishing a successful litter court and offer resources for how other communities can do the same.
The event is free and open to the public. Law enforcement officials, justices of the peace, constables, state and city prosecutors, elected and appointed officials, environmental managers, code enforcement officers, public works directors and sanitarians from the parishes of Jefferson, Orleans, St. John the Baptist, St. Bernard and Plaquemines are encouraged to attend.

Restaurant chain commits to La. seafood
National restaurant chain Another Broken Egg Cafe has committed to a partnership with the Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board to promote the restaurant chain's use of Louisiana seafood in its restaurants.
With the agreement, 65 Another Broken Egg Cafes nationwide will sell Louisiana shrimp and crawfish. The agreement also includes new locations, with another 80 cafes in development, and gives the chain authentic Louisiana certification from the board for its seafood.
Each month, the chain purchases more than 5,000 pounds of shrimp and 1,300 pounds of crawfish from Louisiana producers. The amount will increase as new restaurants are opened, officials said.
The chain's restaurants are located across the southeastern United States and also California, Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky. Founded in 1996 in Old Mandeville, the chain is operated by Another Broken Egg of America, based in Destin, Florida.
“It is always an economic victory for Louisiana when a local company grows nationwide, and still chooses to expand its own operations and brand within our state’s borders. It’s downright incredible when that same company commits to supporting a critical local industry through its national supply chain,” said Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser.
Florida Parishes Forestry Forum set
The 27th annual Florida Parishes Forestry Forum will be held on March 17 at the University Center at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond.
Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. The forum ends at 2:45 p.m.
The forum, which is sponsored by the LSU Agricultural Center, will provide information on the status of EPA’s Waters of the U.S. and other forestry issues. Topics also include problems facing loggers; feral hog trapping; state and federal forestry issues; herbicide applications; use value taxation; and timber severance taxes.
Registration is $40 per person and includes lunch.

Zaxby's opens Millerville restaurant
Zaxby’s has opened a restaurant at 13770 Millerville Greens Blvd.
The restaurant serves chicken fingers and wings, sandwiches and salads. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
Founded in the 1990's, Zaxby’s has grown to more than 800 locations in 17 states and is headquartered in Athens, Georgia.
Applications sought for PitchNOLA contest
Propeller is accepting applications for PitchNOLA: Living Well, a business pitch competition that will award $10,000 in total funding to narrow health disparities in New Orleans.
Applications filed online before April 10 receive feedback to help strengthen the application ahead of the final deadline on April 25.
With a life expectancy gap of 25 years between the city’s most affluent and low-income neighborhoods, innovative solutions are needed to ensure all residents have affordable access to healthy lives, free of trauma and oppression, organizers said. Those include access to fresh, healthy food; improving the city’s health infrastructure; creating new health care technologies; strengthening the local food economy; and addressing social determinants to health.
Nonprofits, for-profits, individuals, clinics, restaurants and other organizations are encouraged to apply. Existing for-profit companies and nonprofit organizations with more than $50,000 in 2016 revenues must present a new idea that is not currently implemented.
Ten semi-finalists will be selected to pitch their solutions on May 24 at Propeller. Tickets are free and open to the public at Eventbrite.
Community college marks Lacombe campus
Northshore Technical Community College recently celebrated the opening of its flagship STEM campus in Lacombe, which specializes in science, technology, engineering and mathematics education.
Dr. William Wainwright, chancellor, presented the St. Tammany Economic Development Foundation with an award recognizing its support and a partnership between the two organizations committed to workforce development.
Over the past three years, the community college and foundation held regular think-tank sessions to align business leaders, community representatives and higher education partners on workforce trends and challenges.
“We know proactive STEM education programs position our parish for growth by preparing our workforce for success,” said foundation Development Director Ashley Cangelosi Llewellyn.
Officials said site selectors and business leaders prefer to locate and grow in areas with highly skilled, highly trained workers. With the new campus centrally-located in Lacombe, St. Tammany anticipates a rise in residents with post-secondary degrees, Wainwright said, noting NTCC’s enrollment has increased by 20 percent.
Jimmy John's opens Canal Street location
A Jimmy John’s sandwich shop has opened at 600 Canal St. in New Orleans.
The shop is the ninth store in the greater New Orleans are, said owner Machelle Payne. She said the shop will employ 30 to 40 workers.
