Rodney S. “Sam” Johnson has been elected chairman of the board at the Bank of Zachary and its holding company, Zachary Bancshares Inc., succeeding Russell Bankston.

Bankston, a retired attorney and former city judge, stepped down after 17 years as chairman, but will continue to serve as a board member.

Johnson, a Zachary-based State Farm agent, was first elected to the board in October 1991. He has served as vice chairman since 1996.

“Our bank is fortunate to have community leaders like Russell and Sam as members of our board,” Bank of Zachary President Preston L. Kennedy said in a news release. “They are fully committed to our mission of meeting the financial needs of our community”.

Founded in 1904, the Bank of Zachary is the oldest state-chartered bank in East Baton Rouge Parish.
