The GE Drilling operation in Broussard will temporarily close by June 30, a move that will led to the layoffs of 77 employees.
The Louisiana Workforce Commission announced the layoffs in a press release Wednesday.
GE Drilling is a unit of GE Oil & Gas. In a statement, the company blamed the layoffs on “challenging market conditions”.
“This action, which will consolidate our North America manufacturing and service operations, is not something that we take lightly,” said Kristen Saunders, a company spokeswoman in a statement. “We believe that this is the right approach for the long-term health of our business to improve operational efficiency.”
The Lafayette area has lost more than 10,000 energy industry jobs because of low oil prices over the past year.
