First-time claims for unemployment insurance in Louisiana for the week ending Dec. 28 decreased to 1,721 from the previous week’s 2,578.
The Louisiana Workforce Commission said the shorter work week due to the Christmas holiday contributed to the decrease.
There were 2,505 initial claims during the comparable week in 2012.
The four-week moving average, which is a less volatile measure of claims, decreased to 2,549 from the previous week’s average of 2,581.
Continued unemployment weeks claimed for the week ending Dec. 28 decreased to 23,648 compared to 24,385 the previous week.
The four-week moving average for such claims increased to 24,021 from the previous week’s average of 23,716.
