Wal-Mart Neighborhood Markets are set to open Wednesday in Prairieville and Slidell.

About 95 people will work at both the store at 40567 La. 42 in Prairieville and at 3130 Pontchartrain Drive in Slidell.

Both stores are about 41,000 square feet in size, roughly a quarter the size of a Wal-Mart SuperCenter. They’re more like a traditional grocery store with a bakery, deli and pharmacy and not the massive array of merchandise found in a SuperCenter.

Wal-Mart plans to open about 170 Neighborhood Markets during the current quarter as the chain concentrates on building smaller format stores. Plans are to open five more Neighborhood Markets in Louisiana this month, including a store in Denham Springs at the corner of La. 16 and Vincent Road. That store will open Jan. 28. Other openings this month are in Alexandria, Pineville, Mamou and Lake Arthur.
