Alexander’s opening market this month
Alexander’s Highland Market at Highland Road and Perkins Road is set to open at the end of March.
The full-service, 37,000- square-foot supermarket will offer Louisiana products, seafood and produce, with a focus on organics and naturals. It also will have an in-store pharmacy, café bakery, deli, floral department and wine department, plus Wi-Fi.
The store is operated by the Alexander family, which traces its grocery business to Richard Alexander who opened the first Alexander’s Grocery in Ascension Parish in 1921. His grandson, Murray, took over the operations and renamed the St. Amant store Murray’s Supermarket in 1977. A fourth generation owns and runs that store as well as the Alexander’s Highland Market.
The market is a member of Associated Grocers Inc., which is headquartered in Baton Rouge and serves over 200 independent retail outlets in Louisiana, Texas and Mississippi.
BBB holding trade show, marketplace
The Better Business Bureau is sponsoring a Mega Marketplace in April and a business-to-business trade show in May.
The marketplace will be held 8-10 a.m. April 24 at the Holiday Inn South–Baton Rouge.
The event allows participants to introduce themselves to about 60 businesses in three hours by rotating from table to table.
Following the event, participants receive the final list of attendees.
The cost is $30 per person for BBB-accredited businesses and $40 per person for non-accredited businesses.
The B2B Trade Show will be held 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 23 at the Belle of Baton Rouge Casino + Hotel Atrium at 103 France St. in Baton Rouge. A business after hours will be from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Booths cost $395 for BBB-accredited businesses with a minimum C rating and $495 for non-accredited businesses.

Grace & Hebert gets EBR school contract
Grace & Hebert Architects has been selected by the East Baton Rouge Parish School System to design a high school to replace the existing Lee High School. DLR Group is serving as design consultant to GHA.
The one-story Lee High School will be demolished this year and rebuilt as a two-story school featuring modern classrooms, updated technology and flexible, collaborative areas for students to study and socialize. It will be designed to accommodate 1,200 students.
In addition to core academic areas, the new school will include a cafeteria, media center, administrative offices, new competition gymnasium, practice gymnasium, auditorium and support spaces.
The estimated cost of the new high school is $58.5 million. It is scheduled to open in the 2015-16 school year.
Hazards workshop set for businesses
A free workshop series has been developed for small-business owners, nonprofits and those who prepare for and respond to natural and man-made hazards.

The workshop was developed by LSU’s Stephenson Disaster Management Institute under a grant awarded by the Louisiana Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness. Funds were provided by FEMA. Participants will receive training and printed materials that cover all aspects of hazard mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery.
Seafood Academy helps fishermen
The Louisiana Direct Seafood Academy will be held in across coastal Louisiana this month and April, with a series of programs focusing on marketing techniques, improving product quality, safety and getting new business.
Sponsors are Louisiana Sea Grant and the LSU AgCenter.
The events include training meetings with classroom sessions and dock days for hands-on demonstrations.

The Louisiana Seafood Academy is held annually before the spring shrimp harvest to provide commercial fishermen an opportunity to learn about new technology and industry research at no charge.
The events will include demonstrations from the U.S. Coast Guard, Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Louisiana Seafood Promotion Board, Nature Conservatory and local providers.
Topics at the training events will vary based on local needs but will address brine freezing techniques, micro-branding opportunities, eco-tourism business options, Coast Guard safety information, using the Internet and social media, and other current topics.
Wildlife field day planned near Clinton
CLINTON — The LSU AgCenter Bob R. Jones-Idlewild Research Station near Clinton will hold a wildlife field day on Saturday.
The event will focus on the management of white-tailed deer and feral hog populations, according to Don Reed, LSU AgCenter forestry specialist at the station.
Topics also include deer hunting regulations, along with consequences resulting from reported epizootic hemorrhagic disease outbreaks during this past season. EHD is an acute, infectious and often fatal disease of some wild ruminants.
Two field demonstrations will focus on techniques for controlling feral hogs using snaring devices triggered by leg-hold traps along with the use of conventional snares and cage traps.
“LSU AgCenter butchers will demonstrate proper techniques for processing feral swine carcasses,” Reed said.
The program will end at noon with a lunch provided in the registration fee. Preregistration is $30 by Monday and $40 afterward.

Women’s business conference set
HAMMOND — A “Women Mean Business” conference will be held 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday in Southeastern Louisiana University’s Twelve Oaks Reception Hall on Texas Avenue in Hammond.
The Louisiana Small Business Development Center at SLU and Tangipahoa Professional Women will host the conference.
The event will provide strategies to help women of all ages survive and thrive individually and professionally,” said Sandy Summers, assistant director of the LSBDC.
It will have various speakers and also feature a panel of experts addressing top wellness issues for women in 2013. There also will be a “Women Mean Fashion” event showcasing spring and summer looks.
Cost is $50, with discounts given to members of TPW. Southeastern students can attend free.

NEW ORLEANS — The Sixth Petrochemical and Energy Industry Procurement Connections Forum will be held March 19 in New Orleans.

Conservation grant applicants sought
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service is accepting applications for up to $25 million in grants to help develop and demonstrate ideas to improve conservation on private lands.
Conservation Innovation Grants are available for state and local governments, federally recognized Indian Tribes, non-governmental and educational organizations, private businesses and individuals.
Applications are due March 22.
Of particular interest are applications for innovative demonstration partnerships on energy conservation, nutrient management, soil health, wildlife habitat and adaptive management.
The grants are funded through the Environmental Quality Incentives Program and are awarded through a competitive process.
At least 50 percent of the total cost of CIG projects must come from non-federal matching funds, including cash and in-kind contributions provided by the grant recipient.
