LAMMICO, the state’s largest medical malpractice insurer, said Tuesday it will return $2.6 million, or 5 percent of premiums, to more than 6,700 policyholders in a dozen states.

Close to 6,400 of those policyholders, or 94.8 percent, are in Louisiana.

Policyholders will receive the refund during the first quarter. This marks the eighth time the company has made a dividend payment since 2008. In that time, LAMMICO has returned $45 million, including the current dividend, to policyholders.

The Metairie-based, physician-owned company specializes in medical liability insurance and products for Louisiana physicians.
