East Baton Rouge Parish is using a mobile app to capture data about trees on public property, including the potential issues with power lines.

The information is particularly important in preparing for and responding to severe wind storms, such as Hurricane Gustav in 2008, according to Hexagon Geospatial, whose Mobile MapWorks will be used to track the trees and catalog addresses for use in emergencies, public notifications and tax collection.

“We are excited to begin using Mobile MapWorks to improve our methods of collecting address and tree data,” said Warren Kron, GIS coordinator, City-Parish Planning Commission. “This solution will allow our surveyors to quickly record location and attribute data while writing directly to the database. With this new technology, there will be no need to export and import data.”
