Louisiana’s middle-market companies are like those in most states: Few of them export products to other countries.

Only 50 of Louisiana’s 1,789 middle-market firms, or 3 percent, participated in the export market between 2008 and 2014, according to a report released Monday by American Express and Dun & Bradstreet. A total of 40 states recorded exports from between 3 percent and 7 percent of their middle-market companies over that period.

The report defined middle-market companies as those having annual revenues between $10 million and $1 billion.

In seven states and the District of Columbia, 2 percent or fewer of middle-market companies exported products over the seven years.

Florida led the nation with 10 percent of its middle-market firms engaged in exports. New Jersey finished second, with exports from 8 percent of its middle-market companies.
