Topgolf has received a permit to build a 55,000-square-foot entertainment facility at the site of the old Tinseltown movie theater near Interstate 10 and Siegen Lane.
The permit for the $10 million facility was issued on Friday, according to records from the city-parish building department.
Officials with Dallas-based Topgolf said they should have an update on the location “in the next few weeks.”
In November, the East Baton Rouge Parish Metro Council approved a rezoning to allow for Topgolf to sell alcohol at the location. At the time, company officials said they hoped to break ground on the facility in early 2018 and construction would take about a year.
Topgolf is a high-tech driving range, where people hit microchipped golf balls that record distance and accuracy. It also features an extensive bar and restaurant.
Topgolf, which was founded in 2000, has more than 40 locations worldwide, in U.S. cities such as Atlanta; Tampa, Florida; and Houston, Dallas and Austin, Texas. The company website lists another 17 locations as opening soon in markets such as Detroit, Minneapolis, Pittsburgh and Dubai.
According to Topgolf, each location creates more than 500 jobs.
