Ascension Parish was the seventh-most affordable place to rent a house in the country during the first quarter of 2015, according to housing data firm RealtyTrac.

In Ascension, the monthly rent on a three-bedroom home represented about 17 percent of the estimated median income in 2015, according to the report. Meanwhile, the monthly house note amounted to 22 percent of median income.

Half of people earn less than the median, and half earn more.

The house note estimates include a 10 percent down payment, property taxes, home insurance and mortgage insurance.

The analysis looked at 461 counties nationwide with a population of at least 100,000. On average, fair market rents as set by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development represented 28 percent of the estimated median household income. Monthly house payments represented 24 percent of the estimated median income.

Buying was more affordable than renting in 76 percent of the counties surveyed, according to RealtyTrac.
