Part of the Macy’s store in the Mall of Louisiana will be converted to a Macy’s Backstage, which offers deeply discounted brand merchandise and is a growing trend for the retailer.

A 16,000-square-foot section on the first floor of the Mall of Louisiana Macy’s will be turned into the Backstage area, company officials said. The section is set to open in the summer and is the first Backstage in a Louisiana Macy’s.

Backstage will sell apparel and brands not offered at a traditional Macy’s. The store-within-a-store will sell clothing for men, women and children, along with housewares, accessories, cosmetics, jewelry and shoes. The store will accept Macy’s credit cards.

The concept was introduced a few years ago. Macy’s has more than 50 Backstage locations across the U.S. In a conference call with analysts Tuesday, Jeffrey Gennette, chief executive officer, said plans are to introduce 100 more locations.

Macy’s stores with Backstages in them have seen sales rise by as much as 7 percent, Gennette said. “Our existing customer is spending more when you have a Backstage in that building,” he said.
