A Nordstrom Rack store, which sells discounted merchandise from Nordstrom department stores, will open in September at the Mall of Louisiana.
The 30,000-square-foot store will go into the power center across from the mall in a space currently occupied by American Factory Direct Furniture Outlets. American Factory Direct is set to move into a space at 9555 Airline Highway, currently occupied by Kirk’s.
It will be the first Nordstrom store in Louisiana. Nordstrom Rack sells apparel, accessories and shoes for men, women and children at a 30 percent to 70 percent discount from regular prices. The store carries designer labels and Nordstrom’s own brands. Nordstrom Rack stores are a fraction the size of a Nordstrom, which are generally between 130,000 to 150,000 square feet.
“They’re a very, very strong retailer that fits across a lot of demographic lines,” said Tony Stephens, general manager of the Mall of Louisiana. “They’ll do a lot of business in this market.”
Nordstrom Rack stores generally have between 45 to 50 full- and part-time employees, said Naomi Tobias, a spokesperson for the Seattle-based retailer. Plans are to start hiring employees about 12 weeks before the store opening.
There are 162 Nordstrom Rack stores in the U.S.
The roots of the store go back to 1973, when a clearance center opened in the lower level of the Nordstrom store in downtown Seattle. The first stand-alone Nordstrom Rack store opened in 1983.
Twenty-seven Nordstrom Rack stores have opened or will open this year. Plans are to open 21 more stores in 2015, including the Baton Rouge location, in cities such as Miami; Buffalo, New York; Bakersfield, California; Anchorage, Alaska; and Webster, Texas.
