New Orleans-based Furniture Mart will occupy the former Airline Highway Toys R Us building, vacated when the toy retailer decided to move to Siegen Lane Marketplace.

Toys R Us spent $3.5 million to build a 58,000-square-foot R Superstore that it opened last week next to Kohl’s.

Furniture Mart could not be reached for comment Thursday, but it has filed for a building permit from the city-parish to renovate the building at 8620 Airline Highway, the address of the former Toys R Us location.

Furniture Mart’s website says it has locations in New Orleans, Kenner, Gretna, Covington and Houma.

As for Toys R Us, the R Superstore format includes a Toys R Us and a Babies R Us side by side in the same building, an initiative the toy retailer embarked on about five years ago.

There are 37 such stores in the U.S., according to the company.

Toys R Us began focusing on younger children about five years ago after it was sold to a private investor group amid stiff competition for toy sales from discount retailers like Wal-Mart and Target.

Siegen Lane Marketplace is already home to Sam’s Club, Walmart, Lowe’s, Petsmart and Books-A-Million, among other stores.
