First-time claims for unemployment insurance in Louisiana for the week ending Jan. 16 decreased to 3,485 from the previous week’s 4,203.

The state labor department said initial claims for the comparable week a year earlier were 2,987. The four-week moving average, which is a less volatile measure, increased to 3,136 from the previous week’s total of 2,934.

Continued unemployment claims for the week ending Jan. 16 increased to 23,891 compared to 23,331 the previous week. The four-week moving average increased to 23,641 from the previous week’s average of 23,115.
