Cool Planet Energy Systems, a biofuels company, broke ground Wednesday on the company’s first commercial bio-refinery, a $56 million facility located at the Port of Alexandria.
“Project Genesis” is designed to produce 10 million gallons per year of high-octane, renewable gasoline blendstocks, as well as biochar, all made from sustainable wood residues. The site was chosen because of its wood biomass availability, interstate and rail access, and direct barge access to more than nine refineries.
Cool Planet expects the facility to produce at least 24 direct jobs and create 150 indirect jobs and support 350 construction jobs.
The company plans two other biomass-to-gasoline refineries: one in Natchitoches and the other at a site to be determined.
