Forty-nine percent of Tangipahoa Parish voters recently surveyed approve of a proposed casino resort project south of Interstate 12 on the Tangipahoa River at the Robert exit, compared to 31 percent who disapprove.

One in five respondents were undecided in a survey of 530 randomly selected Tangipahoa Parish registered voters conducted Feb. 19 by the University of New Orleans Survey Research Center. The poll was sponsored by Louisiana Public Opinion LLC.

The owners of the DiamondJacks riverboat casino in Bossier City are considering whether to upgrade their facility there or move it to the Tangipahoa site.

For Los Angeles-based Peninsula Pacific to make the move, the project will have to get through the state Legislature as well as the Tangipahoa Parish Council, before it could be put to parishwide vote.

While both men and women approve of the casino resort than disapprove of it, there is a gender gap. Fifty-seven percent of men and 43 percent of women approve. Relatively equal percentages of men and women oppose the proposed casino, but women are twice more likely than men to report they do not have an opinion on the matter.

The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.2 percent and confidence level of 95 percent.
