Nine merchants have signed leases to join Trader Joe’s in the main building that will be completed in September at Acadian Village Shopping Center, Commercial Properties Realty Trust said Friday.

They are local companies Kean’s Fine Dry Cleaning and The Keeping Room; national retailers Nadeau Furniture with a Soul, Petco, Smarter Eyewear and Pei Wei (P.F. Chang’s fast-food restaurant); and New Orleans-based Baby Bump Maternity, Air Blow Dry Bar and La Divina Italian Cafe.

Trader Joe’s, the popular California-based specialty grocery store, will anchor the 54,000-square-feet of retail, which will be constructed where the former Wal-Mart was, with its back to the interstate.

Galatoire’s Bistro opened at Acadian Village in January and Acme Oyster House has been open since 2008.

A later phase is planned in the back corner of the property between Acme and the retail center, though details have not been released yet.

“The mix of businesses in Acadian Village will serve the well-established surrounding neighborhoods and draw more shoppers to the thriving Perkins Road Overpass area,” Carolyn Martin, president and CEO of Commercial Properties Realty Trust, said in a news release.

Kean’s store at Acadian Village would put two locations close together. Kean’s owner Rock Rockenbaugh said the company hasn’t made a decision on whether it will sell the existing location in the former Perkins Road Hardware site, located just south of Acadian Village in the Perkins Road Overpass area.

Rockenbaugh said it is not inconceivable that both could stay open, depending on the numbers. But, he noted, demand for retail space in the area is high and the existing site has a covered drive-up, but no drive-through, which is crucial to the dry cleaning business.

Rockenbaugh said Kean’s will benefit from Acadian Village because Trader Joe’s will make it a destination for people. That makes it a good spot for a dry cleaner, particularly one with a drive-through window.
