Agritourism workshop planned in Hammond

The LSU AgCenter will offer an agritourism workshop from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 30 at the Hammond Research Station six miles east of Hammond at 21549 Old Covington Highway, which is La. 1067.

Topics include how to create an agritourism venue, attract visitors and market the business and how to become a certified agritourism operator under the 2008 Louisiana Agritourism Limited Liability Law.

The event will conclude with a tour of Mrs. Heather’s Pumpkin Patch in Albany.

Registration is $15 per individual or $20 per couple before Oct. 20, or $20 per individual and $25 per couple the day of the workshop. Lunch is included, but transportation to the pumpkin patch is up to participants.

The workshop is sponsored by the AgCenter, Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry and Tangipahoa Master Gardeners.

Guaranty Income Life rated by A.M. Best

Guaranty Income Life Insurance Co. announced A.M. Best has upgraded its financial strength rating to B+ (Good) from B (Fair) and the issuer credit rating to “bbb-” from “bb+.”

The outlook for all ratings is stable.

A.M. Best said the upgrade “reflects Guaranty Income’s improved risk-adjusted capitalization and a reduction in credit risk within its investment portfolio through lower allocations to below-investment-grade bonds. Risk-adjusted and absolute capital levels have increased due to organic earnings growth and the issuance of a surplus note.”

Guaranty is licensed in 31 states.

SCORE plans business workshop for startups

SCORE is holding a free workshop on starting a business from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 7 in the East Baton Rouge Parish Main Library at 7711 Goodwood Blvd., Baton Rouge.

Topics include the myths and realities of entrepreneurship; critical success factors; components of business ownership; making it legal; funding and cash management; and business plan basics.

JEDCO schedules software seminar

A free seminar on software tools that help entrepreneurs will be from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Oct. 22 at the Jefferson Parish Economic Development Commission Conference Center at 701A Churchill Parkway, Avondale.

Companies will learn about software that will help grow their companies and make their jobs easier.

The seminar is part of the Grow with JEDCO Series and is designed for small and medium-sized businesses.

Topics include the limitations of tracking data in Excel; how to avoid picking the wrong tools; and integrating the tools a company already has with new ones.
