Amedisys Inc., a Baton Rouge-based home nursing and hospice company, reported a first-quarter profit of $6.2 million, or 19 cents per share, compared with a loss of $35 million, or $1.07 per share, a year ago.

However, the 2016 results included after-tax charges of $4.7 million, or 14 cents per share, for a new software system, restructuring expenses, legal fees and acquisitions. The 2015 results included a $75.2 million write-off of a failed in-house software system.

Without those charges, the company earned $10.9 million, or 33 cents per share, compared with $9.8 million, or 30 cents per share, a year earlier.

Wall Street stock analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Service had forecast earnings of 34 cents per share.
