The Domain Companies, which has upscale mixed-use developments in New Orleans and Baton Rouge, is going smoke-free.
The company is banning smoking in all apartments and indoor/outdoor common areas. The policy is effective immediately for new tenants and a smoke-free addendum will be inserted to current leases once they expire.
The move will affect nearly 1,000 apartment units Domain owns and manages in the two cities, and 700 units that are currently being developed. Domain’s properties include The Grove, a mixed-use development near the Mall of Louisiana in Baton Rouge, and The South Market District, a $200 million mixed-use development in downtown New Orleans.
“Domain is committed to improving the health and well-being of our residents and creating sustainable developments that improve lives and livelihoods,” said Matt Schwartz, co-founder of Domain, which has offices in New Orleans and New York. “We believe that the vast majority of renters desire smoke-free living, and that these renters have the right to a healthier home and smoke-free air.”
Domain said it is the first major Louisiana apartment owner to go smoke-free in all of its properties. The new policy came as the city of New Orleans recognized Smoke Free Week, which ended Friday.
