La. farmers getting 'safety net' funds

About 12,500 Louisiana farms that enrolled in safety-net programs established by the 2014 Farm Bill will receive financial assistance for the 2016 crop year.

The Agriculture Risk Coverage and Price Loss Coverage programs are designed to protect against unexpected drops in crop prices or revenues due to market downturns, said T. Christine Normand, acting state executive director of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Louisiana Farm Service Agency.

Producers in all 64 parishes have experienced a significant drop in prices or revenues below the benchmark established by the ARC or PLC programs and will receive payments totaling $61 million, she said.

Payments related to corn crops made up much of those payments. Payments also were made for grain sorghum, soybeans, wheat, peanuts and oat crops. Cash flow from these payments is particularly helpful to farmers and ranchers in counties impacted by natural disasters.
