IESI LA Corp., a subsidiary of Progressive Waste Solutions Ltd., has acquired The Recycling Foundation Inc., which has locations in Baton Rouge and Lafayette.

The price was not disclosed for the deal, which was effective Aug. 1.

The Recycling Foundation was opened in the early 1990s by the Cheatham family, and it was the first material recovery facility in the state.

The foundation now serves more than 500 businesses and has curbside recycling contracts for East Baton Rouge Parish, Lafayette, Zachary, Youngsville and Carencro. The Recycling Foundation processes around 5,000 tons of recyclables per month.

The material recovery facility in Baton Rouge covers about 35,000 square feet. The “single-stream” facility allows customers to combine paper, metals, cardboard and plastics in one large container.

“This acquisition will enhance our efforts to bring our recycling services throughout Louisiana. We have been at the forefront of recycling in other parts of the country and we intend to tap into our knowledge and expertise to increase recycling here in Louisiana,” Phil Smith, region vice president of IESI, said in a news release. “We expect to see many opportunities for the expansion of recycling in the state.”
