A Smokin Aces barbecue restaurant is set to open later this month in the Main Street Market.
Plans are to open the restaurant the week of May 19 in the spot closest to Main Street, said Brian Medlin, who owns Smokin Aces.
“We’ve been looking for the right spot downtown for about 12 months,” Medlin said. “We think downtown fits our culture. ... You can not spend a fortune and get a good quality and quantity of food to fill you up.”
Medlin has brought in Richard Markert, a longtime friend, to serve as operating partner.
The downtown Smokin Aces will be a little different than the original Government Street location. Because there won’t be a deep fryer, the menu will be a little more heart-healthy, with salads and fresh fruit replacing onion rings Medlin said. But barbecue staples such as potato salad and baked beans will be on the menu.
“The menu will be more toward combos and sides,” he said. “The portions will be the same as Government Street, but there will be drinks and sides wrapped in.”
That will reflect the fact that many of the customers will be downtown workers on their lunch breaks.
Even though the Main Street Market isn’t far from Mid City, Medlin said the meat won’t be smoked at a central location and brought to downtown. “We bought a huge, big old smoker, and we’ll do our oawn processing downtown,” he said.
Smokin Aces opened on Government Street in October 2012.
