FHL sponsors events on tax credits
The Foundation for Historical Louisiana is sponsoring two seminars on federal and state commercial rehabilitation tax credits.
The first seminar is for real estate agents, developers and businesses and is set for noon Sept. 26. The second seminar is for homeowners and set for 6:30 p.m. Oct. 6.
The seminars will be at the Old Governor’s Mansion.
Both seminars are free for FHL members and $10 for nonmembers.

Zachary Surgical Center opens
Zachary Surgical Center has opened in Zachary at 4845 Main St. in the Sullivan Medical Office Park.
Zachary Surgical Center is a partnership between local surgeons and Meridian Surgical Partners LLC in Nashville, Tenn.
The 8,300-square-foot facility features two operating suites and one procedure room. Outpatient surgical procedures are being performed at the center in gastroenterology, general surgery, orthopaedics, pain management, podiatry and spine.
Synergy Productions moves locations
Synergy Productions Inc., a video production company, has moved to 9544 Fenway Ave. near Interstate 12 and Airline Highway.
The company specializes in high-definition production, creative editorial and underwater imaging for advertising agencies, corporations, area businesses, political and governmental agencies.
The new facility has improved offices and audio and video editing suites for creating television commercials, marketing presentations, public relations projects and video for the Internet, the company said.
Synergy now offers a 30-foot by 40-foot studio, which features a 15-foot lighting grid, three phase 400 amps of power, covered loading area, make-up area and client office.

Necropolis 13 chosen for Weather Channel
Midnight Productions’ Necropolis 13 has been selected by The Weather Channel as one of its “Top 10 Outdoor Haunted Attractions” for an upcoming national television special titled “Top Hollow Screams” to air in October.
The Weather Channel will be on site to shoot Necropolis 13 on opening night Sept. 22.
The attraction was selected based on photos, videos and interviews.
J.C. Penney finishes store renovation
J.C. Penney has completed a $3 million-plus renovation at its store in the Mall of Louisiana.
The Baton Rouge store is one of 69 Penney’s stores undergoing a renovation this year. The retailer is also introducing Sephora, an upscale line of beauty products and accessories, inside the stores.
Health-care firm changes name
Baton Rouge-based Medical Management Options Inc., an in-patient behavioral health-care company, has changed its name to MMO Behavioral Health Systems.
The company said the name change was initiated to better identify MMO as a behavioral health-care provider. MMO has 14 facilities and more than 550 employees.
OLOL to offer speech therapy
Baton Rouge Speech and Hearing Foundation and Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center announced a partnership to provide speech-language evaluations and therapy at OLOL’s Pediatric Development and Therapy Center.
The center will see children up to 16 years old with a variety of developmental delays and disorders, including autism; mental retardation; cerebral palsy; developmental delays; pervasive developmental disorder; learning, speech disorders, and behavioral disorders; attention deficit hyperactivity disorder; and Asperger’s syndrome.

Authors slated to speak for SU series
Coauthors of a recently published biography of late New Orleans civil rights attorney Alexander Pierre Tureaud Sr. are slated for the 2011-12 Southern University Law Center Speaker Series at noon Oct. 14 in 129 A.A. Lenoir Hall.
Rachel L. Emmanuel, SULC’s director of communications and development support, and A.P. Tureaud Jr., a retired educator and son of the late attorney, will present the series’ opening lecture.
Their presentation, titled “A More Noble Cause: A.P. Tureau Sr., and the Struggle for Civil Rights in Louisiana,” examines a legal career devoted to civil rights.
Louisiana Women’s Conference set
The Third Annual Louisiana Women’s Conference will be held Friday at the Hilton Riverside in New Orleans.
This year’s theme is “People, Purpose and Passion: The Pathway to Success.” The featured keynote speaker is Dee Dee Myers, former White House press secretary, political correspondent and author.
The conference is also seeking nominations for the “Most Powerful and Influential Women Award.”

Firm to build repair center for equipment
Frank’s Casing Crew and Rental Tools, a Lafayette-based multi-service tubular company, is building an 18,000-square-foot equipment repair service center.
The facility will be located across from Frank’s corporate headquarters at Verot School Road and Interstate 49.
The service center is expected to employ 35-50 people and will be operational by the first quarter of 2012.
The development is led by Thompson Brothers Construction.
IRS releases specifications for test
The Internal Revenue Service has released the specifications for the competency test individuals must pass to become a Registered Tax Return Preparer.
The specifications identify the major topics that will be covered by the test, which will be available starting this fall.
Although individuals who already have a provisional preparer tax identification number from the IRS do not have to pass the exam until Dec. 31, 2013, they may take the exam at any time once it is available.
The fee for the test has not been finalized but is expected to be between $100 and $125, which is separate from the PTIN user fee.
Once the test is available, preparers who have online accounts at http://www.irs.gov/ptin can use their accounts to schedule a test time.

The LSU Flores MBA Program’s Distinguished Speaker Series will feature Peter Johnson, president of Sinclair Oil Corp., at 9 a.m. Sept. 30 in LSU’s Energy, Coast and Environment Building.
