A Checkers restaurant is set to open in mid-October in the Central Wal-Mart Supercenter, the first of as many as 10 locations the local franchisee hopes to open in metro Baton Rouge over the next five years.

Ramsey Ali said the Checkers restaurant will go into a 1,800-square-foot space in the front of the store that had been occupied by McDonald’s. About 30 people will work in the restaurant, which also will feature an Auntie Anne’s pretzel stand

This is the first Checkers restaurant for Ali. Checkers Drive-In Restaurants owns both Checkers and Rally’s, which had five drive-through locations in Baton Rouge in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The restaurants have the same menu, featuring hamburgers, seasoned fries, chicken sandwiches and hot dogs.

Ali said he’s looking across metro Baton Rouge for more potential sites, including freestanding Checkers and restaurants inside other stores.

“This is a great brand, with great food and great potential,” he said.

There are 26 Checkers and Rally’s locations across Lafayette and metro New Orleans.
