It took less than an hour for a jury to deliver a guilty verdict for a man who stole a former police officer’s insignia and crashed into a cruiser while trying to escape, 21st Judicial District Attorney Scott Perrilloux said.
Maurice Anderson, 45, of Milley Lane in Hammond, was found guilty Wednesday before Judge Bruce Bennett in the Tangipahoa Parish Courthouse.
Prosecutors said he stole televisions, jewelry and firearms from a Loranger home in April 2012. Police caught up with Anderson while he was driving, and he tried to escape. With officers in pursuit, he drove into oncoming traffic and ran into a police car, Perrilloux said.
Investigators found stolen items in Anderson’s vehicles and brass collar insignia from the Hammond Police Department — where the victim had worked — in Anderson’s pocket.
He faces sentencing Wednesday on counts of theft over $1,500 and simple battery.
