Parts of the cash box from an automated teller machine pulled from a Tangipahoa Parish deli have been located in Baton Rouge, and the truck used in the theft has been found in Hammond, authorities said Thursday.

The chains used to yank open the doors of a deli in Hammond and drag the ATM out were still attached to the truck when it was located, said Dawn Panepinto, a spokeswoman for the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office.

The truck stolen Sunday was abandoned shortly after being used in the theft, Panepinto said.

The ATM was left at the site of Sunday night’s burglary, but the vault from the ATM has since been found on Choctaw Drive in Baton Rouge, she said.

Part of the ATM was spotted in a dumpster by a business owner who then contacted police, said Lt. Don Kelly, a spokesman for the Baton Rouge Police Department.

“We were able to use paperwork found inside to identify it” as being from the theft in Hammond, Kelly said.

Meanwhile, detectives have been able to obtain a lot of evidence from inside the truck, which was found behind North Cypress Fitness Center in Hammond, Panepinto said.

Video from a surveillance camera indicates the people who abandoned the truck minutes after the burglary then fled in a maroon Cougar with a grey or silver pinstripe on the sides, she said.

Panepinto said sheriff’s detectives aren’t aware of any similar burglaries in the area.

In the Sunday night incident, thieves first wrapped a chain around the doors of Ryan’s Convenience Store and Deli and pulled them open, said employee Katelyn Bryant.

They then dragged the ATM, which was bolted to the floor, out of the store, took the money from it and left, she said.

“They tore down a whole door and half a wall” in the process, Bryant said.

The business had shut down for the evening about 6 p.m. Sunday, and the incident occurred after 10 p.m., she said.

By 2 p.m. Monday, the store had opened again with a boarded-up front, she said.

Panepinto asked that anyone with knowledge of the burglary to contact Crime Stoppers at (800) 554-5245.
