A 12-year-old boy was killed in a utility terrain vehicle crash Saturday evening that also resulted in the arrest of the vehicle’s driver, according to the St. Helena Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were called out about 5:15 p.m. to Calmes Road, where the boy was riding a UTV driven by Joshua Tharpe, 36, who had made a sharp turn on an area of wet sand and flipped the vehicle, killing the boy, said Joe Chaney, the Sheriff’s Office chief of detectives. A UTV is similar to an all-terrain vehicle but typically larger.

Tharpe was arrested on a count of vehicular homicide and has since been released on a $100,000 bond, Chaney said.
