A vehicle fleeing from police Tuesday afternoon in St. Helena Parish veered off the road and smashed into the support columns of a raised house near La. 1046 at La. 441, killing the driver, State Police said.
The chase began shortly after 3:30 p.m. when troopers were called to assist Amite police, who were chasing the fleeing car west on La. 16 in Tangipahoa Parish, State Police spokesman Sgt. Nick Manale said.
The 2005 Ford Focus turned onto La. 1046 speeding westbound, he said.
Troopers discovered the Focus had traveled 300 feet off the paved roadway before it crashed into the support columns. The driver, Benjamin Zanders Jr. 30, of Independence, sustained fatal injuries in the crash, Manale said.
Zanders, who was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Helena Parish Coroner’s Office. Impairment also is suspected to be a factor in the crash pending the results of a toxicology analysis, Manale said in a news release.
