A Greensburg man was killed in a Wednesday morning wreck in which his car hit a tree and split in half, State Police have reported.

Troopers were called to La. 1042 west of Greensburg about 10 a.m., according to a news release.

They suspect Damien Jerard Carriere, 23, drifted off the right side of the road and that when he tried to get back in his lane, he over-corrected, causing his Ford Crown Victoria to begin spinning.

The car then went off the left side of the road and hit a ditch, launching it into the air.

“While airborne, the vehicle struck a tree and separated into two halves,” the release states.

The St. Helena Parish Coroner’s Office pronounced Carriere dead at the scene. Investigators have not determined why the driver initially ran off the road but do not suspect impairment.
